Small Things Matter

What is the price of five sparrows-two copper coins? Yet God does not forget a single one of them. And the very hairs on your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows.” Luke 12:6,7

Just a word of encouragement today as I was doing some reading earlier.

The sparrows are worth pennies and yet He cares. I know, I know. Some of you may be nodding your heads or saying ‘duh of course God cares’, it’s like God 101. The fundamental basics.

I know this is not exactly breaking news. But I find myself in a season of re-realizing things that I have known for most of my life as a Believer. Re-realizing and going a little deeper in exploring what I have always known. Especially when it comes to things of a spiritual nature. I grew up being taught God cares. Easy to say. Easy to teach. But reading verses of scriptures like those at the beginning of this post recently I am reminded that nothing is outside of God’s concern.

I think sometimes we may believe that it’s only the big or major things that matter to God. Laid off from work. A threat of eviction or foreclosure lingering a little to close. A cherished relationship losing light. A close family member diagnosed with a serious illness. Things we will post on social media about. The ‘sensational’ things. Now don’t get me wrong, those issues can be absolutely devastating and of course they matter. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with posting about our troubles and concerns. Often times it helps to share and petition support from others.

I’m sure we’ve all heard preachers preach and teachers teach with great conviction that “NOTHING is too Big for God!” Again, nothing wrong with this. But uhmm, I’d just like to maybe whisper, interject, remind some folks that nothing is too small for God either.

The little things. In Luke 12:7, Jesus makes mention that even the hairs on our head are numbered! What?? This hit different for me the other day as I reflected. It may sound a bit juvenile, but I have a lot of hair. Like down past my waist, wraps around my neck some nights, takes two days to dry, lots of hair. I wouldn’t know where to begin to count the individual hairs. But yet God knows the number for each person, that is just crazy!

These verses are a great reminder that nothing is too small for God. If it is something we are concerned about then God is also concerned. We are after all His children. What parent is not concerned about everything to do with their children regardless of age? I believe God actually wants to hear more about the things we think are small. If it matters to you then it matters to Him.

God wants a personal intimate relationship with us. He doesn’t want to have a ‘fairweather’ friendship with us. We all have or have had at least one person we know who we can call ‘fairweather’ friend. We only hear from them when something major is wrong or when they need something. Dare I say maybe some of us are ‘fairweather’ friends…? Uh oh.

Sometimes it’s the things we label small that are actually affecting the big things. Sometimes the conversations might be like: “God the dating scene is whack! Am I ever going to get married? “I don’t even have any real friends, I’m lonely”. “Lord, how come I can’t seem to advance in my career?”

And God is there like, ”uhmm when are we going to talk about the deep insecurities and doubt you try to hide and act like you don’t need anybody?” Or, “let’s talk about that less than pleasant attitude you display in your current job before we talk about elevation.” “Oh so you think I don’t know about that heartbreak you’ve been hiding from everyone including Me that’s preventing you from healing and moving on?”

Sometimes we may feel like we’re bothering God. I can say I have definitely felt like this countless times. Like maybe He is tired of hearing about my ‘stuff’. Or maybe my ‘stuff’ is too trivial. Our self-doubts and insecurities lead us to think He’s not interested. We may think there’s folks out there that need God with more important needs, so we think we are being humble and even possibly ‘serving better’ by not bothering Him. Here’s another gentle reminder that if God cares about the sparrows; millions of sparrows that are everywhere globally; identical to one another pretty much, then my friend you are a BIG deal to God! Major. Never forget this!

One of the countless beautiful things about God is He is omniscience. Simple explanation, God knows everything. He just does. He knows past present and future. Like, EVERYTHING. I laugh when I think of the times I’ve thought I could hide things. And not just sin but negative thoughts, anger, hurt etc. But He already knows everything so we may as well talk to Him. He will not be surprised by anything, trust He already knows. Sometimes we think its redundant to ‘bother’ God with that He already knows. Nope, just talk to Him.

He is also omnipresent meaning God is everywhere all the time. To look at that Globe you may wonder how can that be?? Well it definitely requires some faith. But it’s because God is God. So if God is everywhere, then He can be there for you and me at the same time. No line-ups, no waitlists, He’s with us.

So put the thought that you are somehow ‘hogging’ God to bed. Nah. Can’t happen. Think of it like global WiFi with a network that can never fail. No reboots, updates, freezing, overloads, just always online. We used to sing a song that says ‘Jesus on the mainline, tell Him what you want”, just talk to Him.

Whoosh. I get excited about this reminder. The little things and the big things. Everything that matters to you. It could be while looking for a parking spot, wanting to have a positive day at work/school, improving a relationship, clarity on pending decisions, new business idea, figuring out where you left your keys last night when you got home. Ev-er-y-thing. If it matters to you, you better believe it matters to God and He is concerned and interested. He loves you so much!

“He counts the stars and calls them all by name.” (Psalm 147:4) Do you know exactly how many stars there are? Neither do I, but its many millions and yet He knows them by name?? This is beyond understanding really, but again evidence that you and I must matter.

Talk to God about everything. A concern, worry, joy, love, fear, thought, anxiety, confusion, doubt, anything that has meaning to us He wants to hear from us about. I am so thankful for this and I hope it encourages you also. Even if you never have before, no time like right now to start the dialogue with your heavenly Father, get into the habit, and grow your spiritual relationship. It may feel awkward at first, but with time you’ll have an improved understanding of what a ‘bestie’ or ‘BFF’ should be! Watch the change that can happen when we do. And remember it’s a two-way relationship, He’s going to communicate back. God uses so many ways to speak to us it’s mind boggling sometimes. We just have to tune in.

Watch the quality of your relationship with God begin to blossom in ways you never imagined when we go deeper in our conversations. Even more amazing is the daily freedom that comes with that release…whohoo! The freedom in knowing and trusting that God knows and is concerned about all our ‘stuff’? What armor is that to put on every day! My friends you will be unstoppable!!

What little or small things have you been thinking don’t matter? What stops you from sharing your thoughts? What thing did you think was small, that once you opened up about you got revelation from? What are your doubts about prayer? Let me know, and let’s talk.

Love you all!
